In this workshop, participants tinker and build their fantasy-monsters from everyday life items and let them come to live as Makey Makey controllers.

It’s not only about being monstrous, but creating a controller that actually works. Who manages to do both and makes the best monster of all times? The competition is on and it will show, who deserves to be the real Dr. Frankenstein.

This Workshop will be in German.

What happens when the game is the monster itself? When horror, panic and fear arise purely in the perception of the players – without a monster facing them? The workshop “AI, Games and Monsters” deals with the question whether monsters must actually exist manifestly – or whether they actually arise from the actions of opponents and figures in a game and thus from the game logic. Because the same associations that monsters trigger in players can also be created by complex game concepts . The workshop will deal with the challenges caused by artificial intelligence (AI) in video games and how this imaginary power allows monsters to be created.

This workshop will be held in German.

The commented video game scenes not only offer the possibility to present current games or to show off skill. They can also be a platform to access the deeper layers of games and enable a narration.

The participants of this workshop will deal with monsters in games. Their own interpretation of events and depicted monstrosities will be recorded as a short Let’s Play.

Monsters of all kind are an essential part of video game history. From cute ghosts in Pacman to Donkey Kong, who started as an enemy and later became the anti hero, to zombies in long-lasting series such as Resident Evil or Plants vs. Zombies heimsuchen. Video game villains in Disney’s Wreck It Ralph even visit a support group.

What is so fascinating about monsters in video games? Why to we accept their challenges? What functions do they have in game design, particularly in relation to overarching genres such as horror, fantasy and science fiction? What kind of game forms and aesthetic conventions did evolve around them and how do games offer the possibility to alter one’s perspective in comparison to more traditional media?

This workshop explores the historical development of monsters in video games, their sociocultural implications, aesthetic characteristics, and our hidden fears. Are there variations of genre standards or the possibility to subvert archaic norms in a playful way?

This workshop will be in German.

For a long time now, digital games have discovered difficult topics such as depression, suicide, trauma, and anxiety disorders as a source of inspiration. Sometimes by means of images and metaphors, sometimes more conrete and without hesitation, developers put their own experiences into these games to share their stories. Games like Sea of Solitude, What Remains of Edith Finch, Depression Quest and many more can help those affected – or seriously harm them.

This workshop introduces the multifarious world of games that deal with mental health: How do games deal with such topics? What is the motivation behind these personal works? And in how far can a game really help those affected and enlighten those who are not affected? In this workshop, participants will find answers to these and many more questions.
