Chaos Projectile is an open source game with roleplaying elements. The development of Chaos Projectile started early 2014 and has not ended yet. The levels, that are drawn by hand, and the possibility to let the players develop the game make Chaos Projectile a special experience. The code can be downloaded and edited for free. Chaos Projectile was developed during the Master’s degree course Games at the Hamburg University for Applied Science.

The teenagers are encouraged to write their own reviews or journalistic texts, produce comics or films with scenes from games or record Let’s Play videos. These activities are complemented by intensifying workshops that discuss further opics like game desing, character design or storytelling. Here, impressions and results are shown that illustrate what happens during school days and workshops.

The single player game „Lumino City“ is the sequel to the puzzle-game „Lume“ of 2001. The player accompanies the character Lumi on her search for her kidnapped grandfather. The point-and-click adventure takes you through a mysterious city in which you get to know many different kinds of individuals, scout out buildings and solve puzzles. To do this the production team built the town of Lumino City out of cardboard, little motors and lamps. On your journey you must travel through a real 3-meter-high model. Everything you see really does exist. Point & click adventures veterans will feel they are right at home in the classical gameplay, but the real scene and the (pseudo-)physical foundation of „Lumino City’s“ world is not only original and refreshing, it is also an impressive idea that has not been seen in a videogame before.

Mimics is a multiplayer party team game. The objective is to imitate various faces, masks and forms to achieve maximum amusement. Selfie photographs are made of one player. Then a team member must guess which fanciful illustration (or even color blotch) matches the photograph.

The basic idea of Mimics evolved during an eight-hour game jam. The jam was joined by seven illustrators who added the humorous, in some cases absurd, models.

Unconscious communication via mimic is a uniquely human characteristic. This makes you “experts” in recognizing emotions in the slightest changes of facial expression. Mimics offers a perfect opportunity to test this capability.

In Leif Rumbke‘s diploma project „Move“, an arcade game from 2006, what counts are coordination, nerves of steel and VERY good reflexes. Beneath the graphically simple 2D-surface and the MIDI sound slumbers a rock-hard challenge to perspective and endurance. You repeatedly dash and jump with a block (yes, a block) through different, color-and-light-dark-changing levels full of other blocks and additional obstacles in order to reach the end of the path for a given level. During the game it is you who controls the speed. Sounds simple, right? But it is tough, unforgivingly hard and gets harder and harder the further you progress in the game. And one error means: return to the beginning of the level. One could call this excessively difficult or maybe even unfair, but this was exactly how things were at the beginning of videogame history. And just like a real arcade game „Move“ wants to stop you on your way to your goal – as often as possible.

George Orwell’s novel „1984“ written in 1949 describes life under a totalitarian regime. Everything and everyone is watched. There is nothing the eyes of „Big Brother“ doesn’t see. This world is the opposite of freedom and individuality. This theme is also taken up by the text adventure „Orwell“. The visualization occurs via operating system and program / app interface. Here the player contacts government representatives, spies on fellow citizens und stores different individuals’ data. News flashes can be viewed und the player can react to incidents. It is an alarming look into what the combination of a control-obsessed authority and technological progress could bring. The game asks questions about personal rights and ethics. How far is control permitted to go? Where does freedom end and tyranny begin? But do not forget: it’s just a game.

Orwell was nominated for the Creative Gaming Award 2015 in the category Most Innovative Newcomer Game.

Retro in its purest of form, the game is simultaneously a freaky homage to four videogame classics including music in MIDI format. The two player game „Pacapong“ merges the visuals of „Pacman“ with the gameplay of „Pong“ and adds elements of „Space Invaders“ and „Donkey Kong“ to the mix. This not only sounds kind of funny, it actually plays that way. The 2D-visual of a labyrinth, through which the players fire their points-eating bullets in tennis-like fashion is simple and very old-school. Players 1 and 2 not only have to take obstacles and dangers in the corridors into account, they also must watch out for an invasion of aliens and a barrel-throwing monkey. However, the game never becomes unfair, since both players suffer equally from the stimulus-overkill. The goal is to have a higher score on your account than your opponent when time runs out.

A single keyboard is enough to play: the keys W, A, S and D for player 1, the arrow keys for player 2. Welcome to the past!

In Signalis, the player controls Elster, an android-girl, who is lost on a dangerous planet that is hostile to life. She has to explore the seemingly abandoned mine colony in order to find the space ship’s pilot. According to classical survival horror games, puzzles need to be solved and enemies have to be fought besides the management of rare resources. Signalis was developed during the course of multiple semesters at the course of study Illustration at the Hamburg University for Applied Science.
