How can you approach this medium properly? And to what extent is a digital game a system? In the keynote “Digital Games as Systems” Aki Järvinen, Ph.D. occupies himself with these questions. He will deal with the characteristics and style of computer games from a systematic point of view and he will show that there is even a playful approach to analyse this complex medium.

Aki Järvinen’s talk is located between Game Studies and Game Design: on the one hand, as General Manager at the mobile games studio Playdemic (UK), and on the other hand, as academic who is involved in theories and methods for Game Design and Game Studies in his dissertation „Games without Frontiers“.

The keynote will be held in English.

Game addiction in a framework of love

Video game addiction is a growing research field around the world, but what does it mean to be addicted and is it possible to love video games without being labeled as an addict?

This workshop will introduce participants to the science behind the concept of video game addiction, the origin of its diagnostic criteria and its fundamental concepts. Participants in the workshop will get a chance to fill out a video game addiction questionnaire and see whether they qualify for the diagnosis. Video game addiction is undeniably a controversial topic; some researchers believe it to be the biggest threat facing young people today while others do not event believe it exists. This workshop will give participants a chance to discuss all aspects of the question.

The second day of PLAY Conference will be opened with an exclusive panel discussion with game directors of Life is Strange, an episodic graphic adventure and one of this year’s most interesting games. During the talk with Uke Bosse, Raoul Barbet and Michel Koch from the French developer DONTNOD Entertainment give an insight in their work regarding Life is Strange. Particularly the emotional aspects like character design and storytelling, that are characteristic for the game, will be mentioned.

Life is Strange tells the “coming of age” story of protagonist Max Caulfield in a touching way and not only allows the player to look into her diary, but also deeply involves him in decision-making moments of her life. There is not much the player can do than to play with feelings.

“More and more Life is Strange transfers the player into a state of possibility. In such a way that you find yourself thinking about life, decisions that you could have made differently or that you could have avoided. For those you wish to have a rewind button. “ (Spiegel Online 02/2015).

The panel discussion will be in English.
